Getting Rid of the Pain with Fibro

November 27, 2013 by admin

The word “fibromyalgia” might not mean that much to you, but don’t tell that to someone troubled with this condition. Fibro sufferers report chronic, achy muscular pain in numerous specific yet widely dispersed sites, predominantly the lower back, neck, shoulders, where the arm bends, upper chest and/or knees. While the precise cause of fibromyalgia remains unsure, data suggests that the immune system is involved.

So far there is no cure for fibromyalgia that is known. A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) has shown that chiropractic care has provided some relief. Study participants underwent 30 chiropractic treatments combining a number of different techniques that including spinal manipulation. The outcome illustrates considerable reductions in pain intensity and enhancement in the quality of sleep and overall fatigue in nine of the 15 patients. These improvements were maintained a month after treatment. Six patients who did not respond to chiropractic care tended to be older and have more severe fibromyalgia than the other patients.

Reference: Hains G, Hains F. Combined ischemic compression and spinal manipulation in the treatment of fibromyalgia: a preliminary estimate of dose and efficacy. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, May 2000: Vol. 23, No. 4, pp225-30.

I came across this information, and thought I would share it.  I have worked with numerous fibromyalgia patients in Mesa and now started taking patients in Wickenburg, Arizona. I want to add, that working with fibro patients is different… what I mean, what works one day may not work the next. The doc has to be on top of his game and pay attention to his/her patient. There has to be great communication between the patient and the doctor. For example, you think your treatment is making a difference, you see a light at the end of the tunnel, and out of nowhere your body takes a left turn away from the light. Unlike most chiropractic patients, these special cases require special handling.  Take ice for example, I love using ice in my practice, but fibro patients, well let’s just say they are not fond of it. They might be willing to get their teeth drilled to forgo it… (Then again, I’ve also had to treat several of my fibro patients for TMJ problems). So, back on track… Ice, if you have fibro and can put ice on, even for a short time, it seems to help with the treatment. If you can’t, then don’t do it, there are other therapies that I also use, such as ultra sound.  In addition to chiropractic adjustments and ice, fibromyalgia can be improved with diet and exercise, but that is a subject for another article.  If you are suffering from fibro or TMJ don’t hesitate to make an appointment.  Relief could be just around the corner.

Tender_points_fibroOne way to test if your pains are fibromyalgia is to press these common pain points. If more than just a couple hurt, chances are you have fibro.

TMJ Pain … Be Gone…

February 28, 2013 by admin

I had a patient that was going to cancel her appointment with me because she had a terrible pains in her jaw. Having her mouth open for an extended period of time in the dentist’s chair can cause that. She was afraid that being face down on an exam table would not be the best idea at this time. You see, she was diagnosed with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by her dentist and her endodontist.

What is TMJ?

The TMJ is the hinge joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the temporal bone of the skull. The joints are flexible, allowing the jaw to move smoothly up down and side to side. If you put your fingers lightly just in front of your ears and slowly open your mouth… well that’s your TMJ moving. So every time you to talk, chew, drink or bite your little sister, that’s your TMJ at work. The attached and surrounding muscles of the TMJ control its position and movement. We all use our TMJ hundreds of times a day. About every three minutes the average person is using their TMJ.

Symptoms:

The Mayo clinic and webMD have similar information on their site as to the symptoms.
• Painand or tenderness around your jaw or ear.
• Difficult or painful to chew.
• Clicking, popping sounds when you open or close your mouth.
• Uneven bite.
• Grinding your teeth (there maybe many different reasons for that).
• Aching pain of the face and around the ears.
• Headache or migraines are common.
• Your ability to open or close your mouth has been reduced.

Simple indication test that you can do at home that you may have a TMJ problem, that you can do at home.

  • Face a mirror with good lighting.
  • Open your mouth slowly.
  • Look for deviation- going or angling from the midline.

Conservative treatments may include:
• Magnets
• Supplements (Jeffery B. Wheaton, DDS, MD )
• Bite plates (splints, appliances).
• Chiropractics for TMJ
• Medication
• Stretching or massaging the muscles around the jaw (your doctor of choice can show you).
• Moist heat or cold packs on the face ( I prefer the cold, sometimes I have them put crushed ice in the area).
• Acupuncture

As Medline Plus stated “non-reversible treatment method, such as orthodontics or surgery, that permanently changes your bite.”

How chiropractor’s can help:

Evidence may suggest that chiropractic treatment provide the greatest satisfaction for the hands-on alternative therapies. One study revealed that chiropractic treatment using a specific adjusting instrument eased patients’ discomfort after only three visits a week for two weeks. Before treatment, patients reported TMJ-related symptoms lasting an average of eight years, but following chiropractic care, they experienced reduced pain and improvements in other symptoms, with no noted side-effects. I on the other hand (no pun intended) do not have a study to back me up, but have used an activator or my hand to adjust patients with TMJ disorders with success.

I wrote this and posted it on the Examiner (http://www.examiner.com/article/tmj-pain-be-gone (July 8th, 2010), but seeing so many advertizements I found it hard to read.

Back Pain & Injuries

November 10, 2011 by admin

Back painLike all chiropractors, Dr. Altman studied the human spine extensively.  For this reason, many patients come to him with back pains.  The Doc takes a compassionate and consistent approach to alleviating the pain and then fixing the cause of this pain.  One of the things that sets him apart from many colleagues, is that he believes he has a moral obligation teach patients how to maintain their health post-treatment.  Keeping you out of his office doesn’t always make business sense, but it is the right thing to do!  According to Garen, here is how the Doc helped him feel good again:

Garen Ridenhour says:
October 11, 2010 at 4:26 am

Wow is all I can say! Dr. Altman is the best! I have had severe back problems the last couple years. Currently I have a bulging disc in my lower back. I have spent thousands for physical therapy and other chiropractors. I have had mixed results with those treatments. My first visit with Dr. Altman was a complete success! I will NEVER go anywhere else! I have lived with back pain everyday for years. I was shocked to have zero back pain for 2 whole days after I saw him the first time. My second time… Still pain free! He knows exactly what he is doing. He is better than every single doctor I have seen. I am a patient for life!

Here at AZ Family Health, we love it when our patients share their success stories.  Not only is this good for the Doc’s ego, it helps other people in pain see that there is hope for recovery.  A general practitioner is often the first stop when someone hurts their back.  And although there is a time and place for pain medication, we often see patients suffering for quite a while under the misguided perception that pain meds with clear up the problem.  This was the case with Eric, as you can hear through his stroy:

Eric says:

Several months ago, I injured my spine in a terrible accident. I tried going to a traditional MD, and other then being drugged up and sleepy, it do no good at all!! So I decided to go to Dr. Altman, to see if he could help with my severe pain, and get me back to normal again. He promised that he would fix me right up after 8 visits. I thought that seems crazy and impossible! After my second visit, I was in considerably less pain, and by the 6th, I was 100% back to normal! Dr. A is a wonderful honest man, who knows his stuff much more so than any other chiropractor I’ve spoken too (and I have one in the family!!)

Do you suffer from back pain?  Are you ready to get back to feeling good and living life again?  Contact Dr. Altman to find out how he can help you get back to good health.

I saw dr A with pain in my back and my right leg after 3 visits he highly recommended I get a MRI , he also recommended a neurosurgeon to review the MRI, after the dr looked at the images he had me in for emergency surgery the next day. There was a cyst pressing against the main never in my back that had me in unbearable pain, unable to bend and almost couldn’t walk. The surgery took about a hour , immediately after waking up, I had NO PAiN and was able to walk . I now feel like a new person! Thank you Dr. Altman !

Absolutely amazing. Incredibly knowledgeable and an absolute life saver. Dr Altman explains everything every step of the way during treatment. Dr Altman is incredibly knowledgeable about treatment needed after car accident. I didn’t realize that the slightest wrong turn would hurt so bad. Dr Altman has an extensive knowledge of exactly what happens to the body during impact. He is all around amazing and has followed the healing process attentively. I highly recommend him, especially if you have been in a motor vehicle accident.

My husband, Al was in such pain when I called. Dr. Altman immediately made an appt to see as soon as we could get there. He did a thorough examine and some adjustments but wanted to be certain, he sent my husband to a physician and for x rays. Then that night he went over and above by calling to see how he was doing. After just a few visits my husband is doing s much better. Another positive is how punctual his appts are. Highly recommend Dr Altman

I highly recommend Dr. Altman. He is knowledgeable and not afraid to think outside the box to get you the help you need. He has been a lifesaver for me. He truly makes his patients a priority. His concern is real and heartfelt and can been seen in how he treats each of his patients as if they were his only patient. Thank you Dr. Altman for all you do!

Dr. Altman was great! My husband and I had just finished a very bouncy jeep tour in Sedona and felt like we had been run over by mac trucks several times. We hurt all over, and my husband has had back issues in the past so his back was tightening up pretty badly. Dr. Altman took us immediately. He was very thorough, did a diagnostic exam first, and then went to work on adjusting us. His sweet therapy dog, Sydney, helped us to relax by allowing us to pet her while she sat under the table during the adjustments. Since I have a hard time relaxing, she was a blessing for me. By the time Dr. Altman was finished, we both felt pretty good and that made the rest of our trip much better! Dr. Altman is very good at what he does and if we lived closer to him, we would be regular patients I am sure! Thanks Doc!

There are a lot of good doctors out there and they know their business. But this one doctor stands out above the rest as he goes above and beyond. His gentle touch and calm demeanor gives him the touch of a true master when it comes to healing. I was overwhelmed by his medical background that goes beyond his chiropractic knowledge. He is very effective when it comes to dealing with pain without using pain killers. I felt much better after his treatments. When I was under Dr Altmans care I suffered a temporary disabling medical emergency at home which I brushed off as being stress induced pain. It was later discovered that I suffered a heart condition that could have taken my life and I believe I am still alive due to Dr. Altman insistence that I see cardiologist. I look at upon him as a miracle worker.

Dr. Altman is easy to get a hold of and make appointments with. He doesn't mind if you text him. He explains the issue you have to help you understand how to prevent it from happening again. His office is comfortable and his dog is sweet and not pushy for pets. I'd recommend him for kids and adults.

Doc has been caring for my crazy body since early 2014. I have three artificial joints (both hips and a knee) and four vertebra fused in my neck, for starters, so I'm a bit complex to treat. Before making any adjustments, he ordered 12 x-rays, as a good chiropractor would do. He is extremely knowledgeable and takes the time to do what needs doing while explaining to the patient. I wouldn't be upright and walking without his help. He is also a very caring and wonderful person. Five stars without a doubt!
