TMJ Pain … Be Gone…

February 28, 2013 by admin

I had a patient that was going to cancel her appointment with me because she had a terrible pains in her jaw. Having her mouth open for an extended period of time in the dentist’s chair can cause that. She was afraid that being face down on an exam table would not be the best idea at this time. You see, she was diagnosed with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by her dentist and her endodontist.

What is TMJ?

The TMJ is the hinge joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the temporal bone of the skull. The joints are flexible, allowing the jaw to move smoothly up down and side to side. If you put your fingers lightly just in front of your ears and slowly open your mouth… well that’s your TMJ moving. So every time you to talk, chew, drink or bite your little sister, that’s your TMJ at work. The attached and surrounding muscles of the TMJ control its position and movement. We all use our TMJ hundreds of times a day. About every three minutes the average person is using their TMJ.

Symptoms:

The Mayo clinic and webMD have similar information on their site as to the symptoms.
• Painand or tenderness around your jaw or ear.
• Difficult or painful to chew.
• Clicking, popping sounds when you open or close your mouth.
• Uneven bite.
• Grinding your teeth (there maybe many different reasons for that).
• Aching pain of the face and around the ears.
• Headache or migraines are common.
• Your ability to open or close your mouth has been reduced.

Simple indication test that you can do at home that you may have a TMJ problem, that you can do at home.

  • Face a mirror with good lighting.
  • Open your mouth slowly.
  • Look for deviation- going or angling from the midline.

Conservative treatments may include:
• Magnets
• Supplements (Jeffery B. Wheaton, DDS, MD )
• Bite plates (splints, appliances).
• Chiropractics for TMJ
• Medication
• Stretching or massaging the muscles around the jaw (your doctor of choice can show you).
• Moist heat or cold packs on the face ( I prefer the cold, sometimes I have them put crushed ice in the area).
• Acupuncture

As Medline Plus stated “non-reversible treatment method, such as orthodontics or surgery, that permanently changes your bite.”

How chiropractor’s can help:

Evidence may suggest that chiropractic treatment provide the greatest satisfaction for the hands-on alternative therapies. One study revealed that chiropractic treatment using a specific adjusting instrument eased patients’ discomfort after only three visits a week for two weeks. Before treatment, patients reported TMJ-related symptoms lasting an average of eight years, but following chiropractic care, they experienced reduced pain and improvements in other symptoms, with no noted side-effects. I on the other hand (no pun intended) do not have a study to back me up, but have used an activator or my hand to adjust patients with TMJ disorders with success.

Relief for Neck Pain

November 10, 2011 by admin

Neck adjustmentPeople generally think of chiropractors when a car injury has lead to whiplash.  But there are various causes for neck pain, and Dr. Altman can provide relief for just about all of them!  Luckily, he also understands that if you have never been to a chiropractor before, the idea of someone twisting and turning an already sore neck can be really scary and intimidating.  So the Doc will orient to help them understand what he is what is about to do and why it helps.  With his good sense of humor and gentle touch, he has a real talent for helping patients in acute pain.  At least that’s what his patients say:

I was diagnosed with torticollis a few weeks ago. I went to Dr Altman and after just a few minutes of interviewing me he went right to work, releasing the tension in my neck and back. Hearing things pop and snap can be pretty disconcerting. He made it easy, of course at first I resisted the treatment but I’m glad I loosened up. Thanks Andrew!

Of course any licensed chiropractor like Dr. Altman can help relieve neck pain.  But at AZ Family Health, pain relief is a part of the process, but not the final goal.  The Doc works with you to get remedy the causes of neck pain.  He goes the extra mile (or several miles) to find out what is causing the pain and to correct the real problem.  Cody found this out for himself:

Cody Smith says:

Dr. Altman is truly a very skilled chiropractor. I’ve been to a few other practitioners throughout the years, due to lower back pain and neck injuries. Some were good, some not so good. Several had the skills to temporarily relieve pain. However, only Dr. Altman concentrated on truly fixing the source of my problems in a more permanent manner.

Doc impressed me with his extensive knowledge of the whole body and how all the systems are affected by an injury or problem in one area. (Very interesting how a pinched nerve in one area can cause weakness or numbness in an entirely different part of the body!) Yet, he managed to never talk over my head, taking the time to explain everything to me clearly.

When I came to Doc Altman, my injury was so severe that my body formed an “S” when viewed from the front! It was almost comical, if it hadn’t hurt so bad. He relieved my pain, diagnosed the true cause of my injury, and through realignment and rehabilitation, corrected my problem permanently. He went even one step further by instructing me in exercises I should do on my own to prevent re-injury.

I highly recommend Dr. Altman to anyone seeking true permanent healing of their injuries. I’m living proof that his treatments work!

If you are suffering from neck pain and live in (or are visiting) the Phoenix East Valley area, don’t hesitate to see Dr. Altman.  He can usually give you immediate relief and then find the source of your problems to provide you with long term relief.  You can use our online calendar to schedule an appointment or contact the Doc directly.

Back Pain & Injuries

November 10, 2011 by admin

Back painLike all chiropractors, Dr. Altman studied the human spine extensively.  For this reason, many patients come to him with back pains.  The Doc takes a compassionate and consistent approach to alleviating the pain and then fixing the cause of this pain.  One of the things that sets him apart from many colleagues, is that he believes he has a moral obligation teach patients how to maintain their health post-treatment.  Keeping you out of his office doesn’t always make business sense, but it is the right thing to do!  According to Garen, here is how the Doc helped him feel good again:

Garen Ridenhour says:
October 11, 2010 at 4:26 am

Wow is all I can say! Dr. Altman is the best! I have had severe back problems the last couple years. Currently I have a bulging disc in my lower back. I have spent thousands for physical therapy and other chiropractors. I have had mixed results with those treatments. My first visit with Dr. Altman was a complete success! I will NEVER go anywhere else! I have lived with back pain everyday for years. I was shocked to have zero back pain for 2 whole days after I saw him the first time. My second time… Still pain free! He knows exactly what he is doing. He is better than every single doctor I have seen. I am a patient for life!

Here at AZ Family Health, we love it when our patients share their success stories.  Not only is this good for the Doc’s ego, it helps other people in pain see that there is hope for recovery.  A general practitioner is often the first stop when someone hurts their back.  And although there is a time and place for pain medication, we often see patients suffering for quite a while under the misguided perception that pain meds with clear up the problem.  This was the case with Eric, as you can hear through his stroy:

Eric says:

Several months ago, I injured my spine in a terrible accident. I tried going to a traditional MD, and other then being drugged up and sleepy, it do no good at all!! So I decided to go to Dr. Altman, to see if he could help with my severe pain, and get me back to normal again. He promised that he would fix me right up after 8 visits. I thought that seems crazy and impossible! After my second visit, I was in considerably less pain, and by the 6th, I was 100% back to normal! Dr. A is a wonderful honest man, who knows his stuff much more so than any other chiropractor I’ve spoken too (and I have one in the family!!)

Do you suffer from back pain?  Are you ready to get back to feeling good and living life again?  Contact Dr. Altman to find out how he can help you get back to good health.

Cluster Headaches … There is Hope

September 27, 2010 by admin

According to the Mayo Clinic; there is no cure. The treatment goal is to reduce the duration and decrease the pain according to them.

Said to be the most painful types of headache. A stabbing pain usually lasts between 15 minutes and two or three hours. Affects one side of the head, usually behind or in and around one eye.

It may radiate to the forehead, temple, nose, cheek, or upper gum on the affected side. The scalp may be tender, and the pulsing in the arteries often can be felt.

A striking feature of cluster headache is that the attacks occur in recurring patterns, or as they say… clusters, that gives its name.

Frequent attacks that occur in recurring patterns, may last from weeks to months, with periods of remission. The pattern maybe different from one person to the next, but most have them seasonal and one episode period year.

There is a remission period, and that too, varies from person to person. This could be months or years.

Cluster headaches have been linked with people that smoke and drink alcohol frequently. Increased sensitivity to alcohol and nicotine should be a given. Small amounts of alcohol can set off a headache. During a remission period a person may consume alcohol without even aggravating a headache.

Other Treatments:

Operating on the trigeminal nerve to relieve symptoms in some people.  A calcium channel blocker, also used to treat high blood pressure, may help prevent or reduce the frequency of cluster attacks. I for one … Will try to avoid surgery till I have tried other alternatives. But that is a personal choice.

Treatment suggested:

In my opinion, headaches of these types have a common ingredient. There seems to be pooling or an increase amount of blood in the brain that may cause this pain.

I found that my patients have responded well to my treatment, adjustments in the upper cervicals and has decreased the frequency of these headaches as well.

Ear infections and Kids

September 27, 2010 by admin

If you ever suffered from an ear infection, you can understand how painful and uncomfortable it can be. .  There is no greater gift than to be entrusted with the care of ones child. I have seen many children that at one point have been diagnosed with chronic ear infections. I have found that by adjusting the upper cervicals had relieved that pain.

Below one of the news organizations did a story on patients bringing their children into the chiropractor that had suffered with chronic ear infections.

I saw dr A with pain in my back and my right leg after 3 visits he highly recommended I get a MRI , he also recommended a neurosurgeon to review the MRI, after the dr looked at the images he had me in for emergency surgery the next day. There was a cyst pressing against the main never in my back that had me in unbearable pain, unable to bend and almost couldn’t walk. The surgery took about a hour , immediately after waking up, I had NO PAiN and was able to walk . I now feel like a new person! Thank you Dr. Altman !

Absolutely amazing. Incredibly knowledgeable and an absolute life saver. Dr Altman explains everything every step of the way during treatment. Dr Altman is incredibly knowledgeable about treatment needed after car accident. I didn’t realize that the slightest wrong turn would hurt so bad. Dr Altman has an extensive knowledge of exactly what happens to the body during impact. He is all around amazing and has followed the healing process attentively. I highly recommend him, especially if you have been in a motor vehicle accident.

My husband, Al was in such pain when I called. Dr. Altman immediately made an appt to see as soon as we could get there. He did a thorough examine and some adjustments but wanted to be certain, he sent my husband to a physician and for x rays. Then that night he went over and above by calling to see how he was doing. After just a few visits my husband is doing s much better. Another positive is how punctual his appts are. Highly recommend Dr Altman

Dr. Altman was great! My husband and I had just finished a very bouncy jeep tour in Sedona and felt like we had been run over by mac trucks several times. We hurt all over, and my husband has had back issues in the past so his back was tightening up pretty badly. Dr. Altman took us immediately. He was very thorough, did a diagnostic exam first, and then went to work on adjusting us. His sweet therapy dog, Sydney, helped us to relax by allowing us to pet her while she sat under the table during the adjustments. Since I have a hard time relaxing, she was a blessing for me. By the time Dr. Altman was finished, we both felt pretty good and that made the rest of our trip much better! Dr. Altman is very good at what he does and if we lived closer to him, we would be regular patients I am sure! Thanks Doc!

There are a lot of good doctors out there and they know their business. But this one doctor stands out above the rest as he goes above and beyond. His gentle touch and calm demeanor gives him the touch of a true master when it comes to healing. I was overwhelmed by his medical background that goes beyond his chiropractic knowledge. He is very effective when it comes to dealing with pain without using pain killers. I felt much better after his treatments. When I was under Dr Altmans care I suffered a temporary disabling medical emergency at home which I brushed off as being stress induced pain. It was later discovered that I suffered a heart condition that could have taken my life and I believe I am still alive due to Dr. Altman insistence that I see cardiologist. I look at upon him as a miracle worker.

Dr. Altman is easy to get a hold of and make appointments with. He doesn't mind if you text him. He explains the issue you have to help you understand how to prevent it from happening again. His office is comfortable and his dog is sweet and not pushy for pets. I'd recommend him for kids and adults.

Doc has been caring for my crazy body since early 2014. I have three artificial joints (both hips and a knee) and four vertebra fused in my neck, for starters, so I'm a bit complex to treat. Before making any adjustments, he ordered 12 x-rays, as a good chiropractor would do. He is extremely knowledgeable and takes the time to do what needs doing while explaining to the patient. I wouldn't be upright and walking without his help. He is also a very caring and wonderful person. Five stars without a doubt!
